Presentation

At the start of the nineteenth century, the piano was at the heart of French musical life: an unavoidable presence in Parisian salons, it was the instrument of choice for amateur musicians as well as for the many virtuosos from all backgrounds who settled in the capital. A new and innovative instrument, the piano owes its omnipresence in large part to the practice of arrangement, which allows the pleasure of playing works originally written for the theater or public concert. Published in large quantities by the music publishers of the time, these arrangements and transcriptions are far from being purely commercial products: in the hands of the best pianist-composers of the time, they constitute a real testing ground for resources. expressive and sonic possibilities of the pianos that relentlessly come out of Parisian manufactures. Their rediscovery today on French instruments of the time represents a privileged access route to the exploration of the French piano repertoire and writing of the beginning of the century, while also shedding new light on the interpretation of the vast contemporary catalog of sonatas, which remains little and little known.
